Description

No. 807 Leyton High Road is a house that has been converted into council offices. It dates from the early 18th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond with red brick dressings and features a plain tile roof. It stands two stories tall with an attic and has four bays.

In around 1970, an unsympathetic shop front and deep fascia were added to the ground floor. The first floor showcases red brick quoins at the corners and around the windows, which have gauged flat brick arches and sash windows with glazing bars and exposed sash boxes, although the lower sash of the fourth bay window has been replaced. There is an eaves band below the parapet with flat coping. The mansard roof features two late 19th or early 20th-century segmental-arched dormers and has end stacks. There are also 20th-century additions to the right side and rear that are not of special interest.

Inside, the first-floor rooms have panelled dados, cupboards, and window reveals. The two front rooms contain decorative fireplace surrounds from around 1800, featuring reeded columns, decorative motifs on the friezes, and cornices. A dog-leg stair rises from the first floor to the attic, featuring a closed string, columnar newels, column-on-vase balusters, and a moulded handrail. The building retains old roof timbers from its former two-span roof.
