Description
Chestnuts House is a substantial detached house built between 1745 and 1747, as indicated by the lead rainwater heads. The building is constructed of stock brick with red dressings and features a pitched tiled roof with a parapet. It has two storeys and an attic storey, facing Hoe Street with seven bays, plus a further recessed bay to the right and an additional wing beyond. The central three bays are more closely spaced and slightly set forward, topped with a pediment. The central doorcase, dating from the early 19th century, is made of stucco and features Doric pilasters, while the door itself is from the late 20th century.
There is a brick band between the storeys, a main cornice of rubbled brick above the first floor, and a subsidiary cornice to the attic. The windows are segmental-headed sashes with thick glazing bars, and there is a blind semicircular window above the pediment in the attic. To the right, a six-bay, two-storey wing is recessed and treated similarly, with an advanced stable wing attached to the right, consisting of three bays with blind relieving arches. The original plan form of the house has been preserved.
Inside, the house features a paved stair hall and a fine openwell staircase with turned balusters and stucco floral enrichment. Original panelling and cornices are present throughout, with more elaborate moulding in the main rooms and simpler designs in the servants' area, which also includes a dog-leg turned baluster staircase. The room to the left of the entrance boasts a rich Rococo ceiling.
