Description

East Hamlet Hospital, formerly known as the Ludlow Poor Law Workhouse, is a workhouse that has been converted into a hospital, built around 1833. The building is constructed from dressed stone and features a Welsh slate roof with reduced stone ridge stacks. It has a U-shaped plan with projecting gable wings and stands three stories tall with a five-window range. The windows include 6/6 sash windows, two of which are from the 20th century, set under combed ashlar segmental arches, with 4/8 sashes above. The gables are stone-coped and pedimented, with corbelled kneelers and mutilated finials.

The central part of the building has a single-storey porch bay with 20th-century glazing, supported by chamfered ashlar pillars and span-arch lintels. This leads to a 20th-century door flanked by 19th-century 6/6 casements, all under ashlar segmental arches. To the left, there is a 19th-century 8/8 sash window, and a 20th-century conservatory is located above the porch.

The rear of the building features stone rubble gables with 19th-century 6/6 and 4/8 sashes, as well as horizontal casements, and includes a further two-storey range. Inside, the hospital retains some six-panel doors with panelled reveals, and the second floor, which was originally a dormitory, remains intact with stick framing. There are also two winder staircases with simple wrought-iron balusters.
