Description
The war memorial in Alexandra Park was unveiled by the Earl of Cavan on 19 March 1922. The bronze work was created by Margaret Winser of Tenterden, a pupil of Rodin. The memorial features a triangular section chamfered limestone column, which is now painted, and is decorated with swags and shields of Hastings Borough. At the top of the column is a winged figure holding a spear and a wreath, also by Margaret Winser.
At the base of the column, there are three bronze reliefs representing the Armed Services: the Army is depicted by foot soldiers with rifles, the Royal Navy by ratings in a warship moving a buoy, and the Royal Air Force by an aviator in an aeroplane. Three steps leading up to the memorial are inscribed with the names of battles and theatres of war. The large polygonal plinth is inscribed with the names of the Fallen and originally contained flowerbeds, which have since been cemented over.
