Description
26 and 27 Wellington Square are an early 19th-century pair of buildings forming the centre of the north-east side of Wellington Square. The facades are stuccoed, with a rusticated ground floor. A moulded cornice runs around the building, above which is a panelled frieze and a wide pediment, incorporating decoration within the tympanum and acroteria. The buildings are four storeys high, with a basement level. They are four windows wide, with two windows per floor at each property. The windows on the first and second floors of No. 26 have glazing bars. The ground floor of No. 27 features a segmental arch above a three-light sash window, while the first-floor windows are modern French windows. The original first-floor balconies have been replaced with plain, wood-balustered balconies. Each property has a right-hand round-headed doorway. No. 27 retains a good original six-panel door with a large fielded centre panel and reeding to the top and bottom panels, topped by a semi-circular traceried fanlight. No. 26 has a more recent fielded-panel door with an untraceried semi-circular fanlight. Basement area railings feature arrow-head shafts and turned newels with pineapple finials. The listed buildings of Wellington Square are considered to form a group.
