Description
18A and 18B Castle Hill Road is a house with a ground floor shop, featuring a brick and stuccoed facade. It dates from the early 19th century and has undergone alterations in the early 20th and 21st centuries.
The building stands three storeys tall, with a shop on the ground floor that has a blind case and fascia. The upper two storeys are finished in stucco. On the first floor, there is a canted bay window with sash windows that include glazing bars, and the upper floor has two sash windows, one of which is narrow (two by eight). The previously noted moulded architrave with dripmoulding is no longer present.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, there was a shop on the ground floor by the early 20th century. Since 2004, the rear of the building has been converted to create two flats that share one entrance, which involved minor changes to the internal layout.
Overall, this early 19th-century street-fronted house is well preserved, with its modest facade enhanced by the bay window on the first floor. It holds group value with Nos. 3 to 6 Castle Hill Road, of which No. 6 is of local interest only.
