Description

Castleton House, located at 123 Castle Hill, is a house built between the 1840s and 1860s, now converted into flats. Previously known as Castle Street, it features a principal elevation of red brick and stucco, with a slate roof, and stands three storeys tall with a basement.

The Castle Hill elevation has a smooth render at the basement level and channelled rustication at the ground floor, while the brickwork is exposed on the first and second floors. The eastern elevation is partly exposed and smooth rendered. A plat band runs across the façade at the first-floor sill level and continues onto the eastern elevation. The entrance features a six-panel door with a simple modern rectangular fanlight and a stucco cornice, accessed by a short flight of steps with an historic iron handrail.

To the left of the doorway, the ground floor and basement each have two windows, with eight-over-eight sashes at the basement and margin-glazed sashes with rusticated stucco window heads on the ground floor. The first floor includes three six-over-six sash windows set within entablatured stucco architraves, while the second floor has two three-over-six sash windows. The central second-floor window surround remains, although the window has been replaced with a louvred air vent.

The eastern elevation features two sash windows, one on the first floor nearly obscured by 121 Castle Hill, and a small two-over-two sash window on the second floor. The eastern gable is marked by two tall brick chimney stacks: one with four flues flush against the gable wall and the other with ten flues. A third chimney stack is located on the rear pitch of the west gable, adjacent to the neighbouring property at 125 Castle Hill.
