Description

126 Castle Hill is an early 19th-century house, which was partially converted to offices in the second half of the 20th century and subsequently divided into five flats around 2005. The building is constructed of stuccoed elevations with a slate roof and features iron railings along the front boundary. It is three storeys high with a basement.

The front of the building, facing Castle Hill, has three bays. The south-facing principal elevation is of neoclassical design, with channelled stucco on the raised ground floor, architrave window surrounds to the first floor, and a corniced parapet to the roof. There are two basement-level sash windows looking towards the front area, and the ground floor features three round arches recessed into the stucco. These arches contain two round-headed sash windows on the left (west) and a doorway on the right (east), accessed by a flight of stone steps leading to a six-panelled door and patterned fanlight. The first floor has three six-over-six sash windows, unified by a plat band running horizontally across the elevation at windowsill height. The second floor has three three-over-three sash windows. Two chimney stacks are set on the party walls, each containing a single three-over-three sash window in the attic. The rear elevation has a regular arrangement of sash windows on all three floors, including a tall round-headed window illuminating the staircase on the left (east) side. Modern dormers have been added to the attic, along with a full-width basement extension. The iron railings along the front boundary may be original.
