Description
The Brooklands is a two-storey house set in its own grounds, originally built as two separate dwellings in the 18th century. These two cottages now serve as wings to a central section that was added in 1825, possibly by Joseph Kaye. The building is stuccoed, and the original cottages, which are two storeys tall and have one window each, were initially oriented to the east and west but now face south, forming the main elevation. All windows are fitted with shutters and feature sashes with chain chords and glazing bars, along with margin lights.
The central section includes French windows on the ground floor, a balcony above, and a splayed bay on the first floor, topped with a timber canopy. An ornamental pierced parapet wall sits between the hipped roofs of the original cottages, and the eaves display a double dentil design. The roof has leaded ridges and hips. The entrance door is located on the west side, while a side door on the east has a semi-elliptical head and is accompanied by a delicate columned trellis. Notably, both Holman Hunt and Gabriel Rossetti are reputed to have lived here.
