Description
The Old House is a country house located on Mill Lane in Hare Hatch, dating from the late 18th century. It was restored in 1979 by John Newton. The building is constructed of brick and features a moulded stone cornice string. The roof is hipped and covered with tiles, topped with a parapet that has stone coping.
The north front of the house has three bays, with the central bay featuring a pediment and a bulls-eye window with glazing bars in the tympanum. There are sash windows with glazing bars throughout. The main entrance is a central six-panelled door, which is topped by an arched radiating and curved fanlight, all framed by engaged Ionic columns, an entablature, and a pediment. This entrance is accessed by a flight of six stone steps that have an iron balustrade and handrail.
On either side of the entrance, there are angular bays that extend the full height of the building, each with three sash windows with glazing bars and a parapet that wraps around. There are later extensions at the rear of the house.
