Description

Paradise Cottage and The Old Bakery are a hall house, originally dating from the early 16th century, with later extensions from the 19th century and alterations in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick and timber framing with brick infill, and has an old tile gabled roof. It is arranged in an L-shape, with the original central hall and a rear extension; it was formerly jettied on the road front, but is now underbuilt in brick. The building is two storeys high, with a ridge chimney to the right of centre.

The front elevation is irregular, with a moulded beam positioned below the first-floor windows, which is likely a repositioned beam from the former jetty. Number 68 has two 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars and a 20th-century panelled entrance door flanked by two fluted pilasters and a flat hood. Number 70 has two pairs of 20th-century 2-light casements on the first floor, and two 3-light casements on the ground floor, all with leaded glass. It also features a 20th-century panelled entrance door on the right, sheltered by a small tiled lean-to hood.

Internally, some timber framing is visible, including plain principal beams with large plain joists on the end framed bay of the ground floor in Number 70. Jowled posts and long arch braces are present on the first floor. The group value of this building lies in its representation of a well-preserved early timber-framed dwelling.
