Description

The Cottage and Tudor Cottage are a house, originally dating to around 1425 or the early 16th century, and remodelled around 1700. The building is timber-framed with plaster infilling, a brick plinth, and a plain tile roof with gabled ends and raised eaves. A brick axial stack has a rebuilt top. The original plan comprised four timber-frame bays, likely a house with an open hall in the centre two bays, the left-hand bay possibly the low end of the house, and the right-hand bay a parlour or later extension. The house was divided into two dwellings around 1700, with Tudor Cottage occupying the western half and The Cottage the eastern half. The south front has an asymmetrical six-window range, featuring 20th-century one, two, and three-light casement windows, with small gabled additions to the attic windows. There are 20th-century plank doors with simple wooden porches. Exposed timber framing displays square panels and an original wall-plate beneath the raised eaves. The rear of the building also shows exposed timber framing and casement windows, but no gables. Inside Tudor Cottage, the right-hand bay reveals cruck trusses, with a cambered collar on one truss displaying peg holes for arched braces. The cruck blades have trenches for purlins. An inserted floor in the former hall features axial ceiling beams with ogee stops and exposed joists.
