Description
The Gardeners Arms Public House is a building that has transitioned from a public house to offices. It dates from the early to mid-15th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th century, mid-20th century, and late 20th century. The structure features a combination of timber framing and rendered brick, topped with an old tiled gabled roof. It is designed in an L-shape with an additional extension at the rear.
The front range consists of four framed bays, with a former cross passage located in the second bay and a former solar at the west end. The building is two storeys high and the south front faces the road. On the first floor, there are four casement windows with horizontal glazing bars. The ground floor features two sash windows with marginal glazing on either side of a 20th-century entrance door, along with another modern entrance door on the left side.
Inside, there is a redundant crown post roof with clasped purlins and long arched windbraces over the solar at the west end. Some of the timbers show signs of being sooted, and traces of wall paintings can still be seen in the solar. The building retains some original timbers, with a simple coupled roof featuring side purlins and large windbraces.
