Description
The United Reformed Church, built in 1785, features a red brick exterior and a slate roof. The entrance front has been significantly altered in the mid to late 19th century. The south front is gabled with a parapet, showcasing a full-height recessed arched opening with Bath stone coping and dentils along the parapet. It has three tall windows, the center one with a rounded head, all featuring glazing bars that create circular patterns. Full-height coupled Corinthian pilasters with stone capitals support the arch, which has a barrel vault underneath with a rendered and lined soffit. The building is flanked by pavilions topped with hipped slate roofs, a brick dentil cornice, and a stone flat band at the first floor. The ground floor features semi-circular arched openings with keystones above the door openings. The right-hand door has six moulded panels with a semi-circular glazed fanlight above, while the left-hand door is similar but has glazed panels. Above the doors are circular windows with glazing bars forming four circles. The north end of the church has been well restored in modern times.
Inside, the church has a double-height space with a balustraded gallery supported by slender cast iron fluted Doric columns on three sides. A plaster cornice runs along the ceiling. The north wall features a central panelled pulpit with stairs on either side, and ornate wood balusters in front of a tall semi-circular arched niche, flanked by six-panelled doors in moulded architraves.
