Description
The main building and two side wings of the former Berkshire College of Art were designed by E J Shrewsbury and completed in 1895 as a Technical School. The structure is made of red brick with terracotta decorations and features Welsh slate roofs. It has a symmetrical design in the Flemish Renaissance style, consisting of a main block that is two storeys high with a basement, featuring a window arrangement of 4:3:4. The central section is taller and projects forward, consisting of three bays and topped with a raised attic that has scrolled flanks and a decorative pediment. The entrance is round-arched and located in a projecting porch, which has a carved balcony above it with a central pedimented name panel. The eaves cornices and window details are made of terracotta, and the building has fancy glazed sash windows and tall conjoined chimney shafts. The one-storey side wings have shaped gables with ball finials above lesenes. A modern extension to the south wing is not of special interest.
