Description
The building is a multi-storey stable structure located immediately to the east of 3 and 5 King Street in Maidenhead, dating from around 1870. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof with gabled ends. The layout is L-shaped around a small courtyard, with stables and a tack room situated on the first floor, accessible via external stairs on the west side that lead to a covered landing in the angle. A hay loft is located on the second floor.
The building stands three storeys tall. The south gable end includes a rolled steel joist (RSJ) over later doorways, along with a hayloft doorway in the gable that has a plank divided door and a hoist above. On the west side of the main east range, there are cambered arch openings on the ground floor with inserted piers, and above them, two segmentally-headed multi-pane iron windows on the first floor. There is also a projecting bay on the left, clad in corrugated sheets and featuring three small 12-pane windows; this bay is supported by ornate cast-iron brackets, which are now located inside a later lean-to below. The second floor is blind.
On the right side of the small courtyard, a shallow flight of stairs with solid brick balustrades leads to a covered open-fronted landing supported by timber posts and topped with a slate roof. These stables were part of Nicholsons Brewery, which was founded in 1820 by Robert Nicholson. In 1965, the brewery on this site was demolished, leaving only the stables.
