Description

Sussex Street Baptist Church is a tall, Classical building featuring a three-bay front with a full-height portico supported by Corinthian columns. Constructed of redbrick with painted freestone dressings, it includes vermiculated quoins, a plinth, a deep cornice (which has been altered due to erosion), and a parapet with a central pediment. A panelled band that once extended across the entire width of the facade is no longer present. The church has Italianate, tall, two-light windows with a central transom at the gallery level, complete with bracketed sills and a sill band.

The entrance is round-arched and features double doors with panelled reveals and a tall keystone, which connects to a circular window above. This window, along with the flanking windows, is adorned with deep hood moulds that have paired impost brackets and keystones. The facade extends one bay around the corner. The main body of the chapel has a slate roof and small-pane sash windows. The left-hand side is cement rendered with rusticated architraves, while the right-hand side displays simple polychrome decoration, including impost and sill banding, alternating blue and redbrick voussoirs, and a yellow brick bracket cornice. Attached to the church are panelled gate piers, and there is an altered transverse hall to the left at the rear.

Inside, there is a gallery along the front wall and a tall panel on the rear wall behind the former position of the set fawr, featuring a roundel, egg and dart ornament, and a large keystone. The seating is steeply raked. The set fawr, pulpit, and front pews have been removed. The windows have impost bands and architraves, with the former sweeping up beside the gallery. There is a baptistery beneath the floor and a Gothic organ case. The trusses are boarded in at collar level. The lobby has a depressed arch opposite the main entrance and a single staircase leading to the gallery. Above the schoolroom at the rear is a hall.
