Description

The Carriers Arms is a public house that likely dates back to the early 15th century, with various later alterations and additions. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, with a roof covered in plain tiles and red brick stacks. The building is single-storey with an attic and has undergone a conversion from its original open hall to an off-centre lobby-entry plan. This entrance is marked by a plain doorcase that now contains a cross window, while the current entrance is through a low brick addition on the left side. The windows are mainly 20th-century cross casements, and there is a canted bay to the left. The central bay projects slightly and is topped with a gabled dormer. The roof has a swept gableted design, featuring a large ridge stack and an additional external stack on the left end. There is a low extension with a pent roof on the right side, and a late 18th to 19th-century range has been incorporated at the rear left under a mansard roof, along with a 20th-century extension to the rear.

Inside, the building showcases 16th-century moulded beams, with the framing exposed at the attic level. It has jowled chamfered posts, and the central bay displays a long arch brace to a cambered tie beam, along with the base of a square, chamfered crown post. The front wall of the central bay features a wall plate with diamond mortices and a shutter groove from a former hall window. The crown post roof has not been fully inspected, but visible posts are unmoulded and have braces to the purlin and collars, some of which are missing.
