Description
The Hermitage is a house likely dating from the 16th century, with additions and alterations in the 17th and later centuries. It is timber-framed, with a rendered finish and sections cased in painted brick. The roof is covered in plain tiles, and most of the brick stacks have been rebuilt. The house comprises a central, one-and-a-half-storey lobby-entry range flanked by two-storey cross wings. A further two-storey, gabled wing adjoins the left side. A six-panel door is sheltered by a gabled porch. Windows are mostly tripartite sashes with arched upper panes, with some unequal sashes containing glazing bars. Two gabled dormers feature unequal sashes and bargeboards. A 19th-century brick stack is also present. The cross wing to the right has been underbuilt in brick, incorporating a sash window with glazing bars under a cambered arch. A stepped first-floor band is visible. The right cross wing also has sashes with glazing bars and bargeboards to its gable. On the return to the right, there are sashes with glazing bars, and a stack to the rear. The left cross wing is also underbuilt in brick, featuring similar sashes. An external stack is located to the left of the gable end. A jettied gable is present on this wing, with exposed studding and bargeboards. The gabled wing to the left is raised and includes a two-storey bay. The interior has not been inspected.
