Description
The Hare and Hounds is a public house that dates back to the 16th century, with later alterations and additions. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, partially underbuilt, and partially cased in painted brick, topped with a plain tile roof. The building is single-storey with an attic and has a gabled cross wing to the right, along with later additions to the right and rear.
On the left side, the building is cased in brick and has a four-panel door to the left and a tripartite sash window with glazing bars to the right. There is also a 20th-century canted bay window on the left gable end. The cross wing is underbuilt in brick and has a half-glazed door with a 20th-century casement to the right, along with an eight-pane sash window above. The right range projects and is covered by a catslide roof.
Inside, the left range boasts a fine plaster ceiling divided into four panels by an ovolo-moulded beam and a longitudinal beam with run-out stops. Three of the panels feature scrollwork borders with mythological beasts and a central square boss flanked by large fleur-de-lys and Tudor roses. The panel next to the current entrance from the cross wing displays four parallel strips of scroll decoration. The ground floor of the cross wing has large chamfered beams with run-out stops and an inglenook fireplace with a bressummer. The original rear wall is studded and includes a Tudor-arched doorway. On the first floor, some framing is visible, including a chamfered jowled post, a chamfered tie beam, and studded walls.
