Description

This is a 17th-century house located on Gaston Street in East Bergholt, with later alterations and additions. The house is timber-framed, originally with a rendered finish, but now largely refronted in painted brick. It has a plain tile roof and a red brick stack. The two-storey main block has five windows on the first floor. The entrance is in a central lobby, accessed via a square, projecting brick porch with a keyed archivolt containing glazed double doors. To the left of the porch is a canted bay with cross windows, while to the right are a two-light mullion window and one cross window. The upper windows are unequal sashes, with blind panels above the porch, all under wedge lintels. A gabled dormer is visible on the roof, which also has a ridge stack. A two-storey rear wing extends to the right, featuring a mansard roof. Inside, the entrance hall retains a chamfered beam with a tongue stop and moulded joists, although much of the original timber framing is obscured. The staircase has twisted balusters, likely dating to the 19th century. The property is approached via a front garden flanked by a pair of 19th-century red brick gatepiers, each topped with a moulded cornice and stone ball finials.
