Description

Folly Cottage is a house dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with later additions and alterations made around 1970. It is constructed of red brick, partly rendered, with a tile roof. Originally composed of three cells, a 20th-century cell was added to the right, and a further cell was added to the rear left. The front of the house features a centrally placed, 20th-century gabled porch. Windows are 20th-century small-pane casements of 2 and 3 lights, some set within early segmental arches, others inserted later. A ridge stack is located between the left-hand cells. The main feature of the left return front is a gable with a tall, pointed-arched recess containing a 3-light window, an embattled gable, and projecting corner pilasters designed as turrets, each capped with embattled features and containing vertical slit vents below. A smaller, rendered addition is set back on the left, with 20th-century windows to both floors and a hipped roof. The house was built as an eye-catcher or decorative feature, likely for the Shottesbrooke Park estate.
