Description

Knowlhill Farmhouse is a hall house that has been converted into a farmhouse. It dates from the 15th century and 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th century. The building features a combination of timber framing encased in roughcast and brick, topped with an old tile gabled roof. It has a T-plan layout, with a catslide roof over an outshut and a gabled extension at the rear. The front section consists of four framed bays, with the middle two originally serving as the hall. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with an attic in part of it. There are two chimneys: one on the ridge of the extension and one on the left gable of the older section.

The north-facing front is irregular and finished in roughcast. On the first floor, there are two 20th-century three-light casements and one single-light casement. The ground floor features two two-light casements and one lower three-light casement. The entrance door, which is also from the 20th century, has four panels and is set in a moulded doorcase within a hipped porch supported by brick piers.

The south-facing rear front is constructed of brick on a flint plinth. It has recessed panels with dentil heads on the first floor and a projecting string course above the ground-floor windows that serves as a hood mould. There is a moulded brick cornice on the gable. The gable features a 20th-century three-light casement window set in moulded architraves, and the first-floor window has a segmental pediment head. A moulded brick mullion window on the eastern return is now blocked. Inside, some of the timber frame is visible, with jowled posts. The middle roof truss has arched brackets supporting the tie, while the other two trusses have redundant crown posts and clasped purlins.
