Description

Walnut Tree Cottage is a hall house, originally one dwelling but later divided into two cottages. The core of the building dates from the late 15th century, with extensions added in the 16th century, and alterations made in the 19th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, and has an old tile gabled roof. The building is arranged in an L-shape, comprising four bays by two framed bays. The gable end, which faces the road, has a small two-light window on the first floor, a larger two-light window on the ground floor to the left, and a 20th-century gabled porch with a plank entrance door to the right. A small tiled lean-to extension with two two-light windows is on the right side. The south-east return front has an irregular pattern of windows; on the first floor, there is one two-light window and one three-light window. The ground floor has two gabled porches with plank doors, a small single-light window, and a two-light window between the doors. Chimneys are located on the ridge and projecting on the north-east side. The windows are mainly 19th-century casements with glazing bars.
