Description
Nos. 12 and 12A on Thames Street and No. 2 Curfew Yard is an early to mid 19th-century building with a stuccoed front that conceals an earlier timber-framed structure. The building stands three storeys high and features a moulded cornice and an old tile roof. It has four windows facing the street above a modern shop front, with small casements on the second floor and flush-framed sash windows on the first floor. Although the building is documented as early as 1639, its timber framework likely dates back to the medieval period. Inside, there is a heavy roof truss with a cambered beam, braces, and purlins. The rear wing, which has been virtually detached since restoration, displays exposed timbering, including wall posts and brick nogging. This building, along with Knights Tavern and Nos. 5 to 16 and 18 to 25 Thames Street, forms an important group.
