Description

The kiosk is a K6 telephone kiosk dating from the 20th century, situated at the junction of St Alban's Street and High Street, Windsor. This standardised design is constructed of cast iron, painted red overall, with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied, rather than perforated. Rectangular white display signs read "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. The interior has been updated with modernised equipment. The kiosk is in good condition.

The kiosk occupies a highly prominent location in the historic centre of Windsor, surrounded by a group of listed buildings. It stands directly in front of 55 High Street (Grade II), and is near 1, 2 and 3 High Street (all Grade II) across the road. Other nearby listed buildings include 12-16 Park Street (Grade II*) and the south-west gate and lodge to St Alban's Street (Grade II). It has a strong visual relationship with these buildings, being visible alongside several of them from any direction.

The K6 telephone kiosk is a significant example of 20th-century industrial design, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It evolved from Scott's earlier K2 design, being more streamlined, compact and cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6s were made, with many later replaced.

The kiosk is designated at Grade II for its strong visual relationship with eight listed buildings, four of which are Grade II*, and for being a representative example of this important 20th-century industrial design within an urban setting.
