Description

Church Gate House is a late 14th-century corner hall house with a cross wing, which has been extended in the late 16th century and altered in the late 19th century. The building features a timber frame with painted render and brick infill, topped by an old tile gabled roof. It is designed in an L-plan, originally consisting of two framed bays, later expanded to five framed bays. The house is two storeys high and has a large chimney on the left side, along with a 16th-century ridge chimney on the right that has diagonal shafts and an offset head.

On the south front, some false timbers are present over the original structure. The projecting gable on the left has a sash window on the first floor, which includes glazing bars and an opening light in the center, while the ground floor features a two-light leaded casement. On the right side, there are two two-light leaded casements on both the first and ground floors. The entrance door, which is half-glazed, is located on the right under a 19th-century gabled porch.

Inside, the house showcases a fine exposed frame with heavy timbers, including heavy square braces to the center truss in what was formerly the upper hall, now serving as a second front bedroom. The posts are jowled, adding to the building's historical character.
