Description

Kingswell House is a late 15th-century open hall house with a storeyed east crosswing. In the late 16th century, a floor and stair were added to the hall. The house underwent renovations and a southwest extension in the late 20th century. It features a timber frame that is roughcast, topped with steep old red tile roofs. The structure consists of a 2-bay, 1½-storey hall range with a projecting 2-storey gabled east crosswing that jetties to the front, supported by three curved brackets. There is a three-light dormer window on the roof of the hall range and an entrance next to the crosswing beside an internal chimney with a square shaft rising above the roof. The east crosswing has two casement windows on each floor, and there is one casement window on the ground floor of the hall range to the west, where the roof extends down to form a porch. A very large 18th-century external west gable chimney is present on the hall range, featuring four tiled offsets. Additionally, a bow window has been added to the east side of the wing. Inside, the hall roof has a double-rebated cruciform crown post with four-way bracing, set on an arch-braced tie-beam with hollow chamfers on the braces. The roof of the wing is clean, while the hall roof is sooted. The inserted floor is elaborately moulded, featuring hollow chamfers and rolls on each side of the axial beam, as well as similar edge-rolls on the soffit of the joists.
