Description
Crown Cottages consists of three adjoining houses located in Ley Green, Kings Walden. No. 1 dates from the late 17th century, while Nos. 2 and 3 were built in the early 18th century at the same time. No. 1 features a timber frame with roughcast, while Nos. 2 and 3 are constructed of painted Flemish-bond brickwork. The roofs are covered with old red tiles, and Nos. 1 and 2 display a decorative diaper pattern of lighter red tiles. This picturesque row of single-storey houses is situated along a slope below road level and faces south.
No. 1 has a long gabled wing extending down the slope to the rear. The south front of No. 1 features three casement windows and a lobby entrance located opposite an internal chimney, which is positioned a third of the way from the west end. There is also a two-light gabled dormer window at the eaves. Nos. 2 and 3 share a continuous plat-band and a stucco plinth, with three casement windows on the ground floor and three gabled dormers at the eaves. No. 2 has a gabled porch opposite its internal chimney, along with a gabled porch at the southeast corner that includes an entrance beside a large projecting chimney on the eastern gable.
