Description
Crown House is a public house that has been converted into a private residence. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a west end extension and a northwest wing added in the late 20th century. The first floor front features exposed timber framing with painted brick infill, while the ground floor is constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond. The east gabled crosswing has a timbered south gable triangle, a roughcast first floor, and a painted brick ground floor. The east flank wall is made of 18th-century red brick, and the west end gable is covered in dark weatherboarding, with the rear also finished in painted brick. The house has steep old red tile roofs and stands two stories tall beside the road, facing south. It features an east crosswing extending to the rear and a lean-to rear outshut. The central entrance is located in a porch in front of a large internal chimney. There is one flush casement window on each side of both floors, two casement windows on the ground floor of the east wing, a single two-light casement on the first floor, and a large chimney projecting from the east side of the wing. The framing displays thin studs and long straight tension braces in each long bay flanking the door. The bay to the right has a higher crossrail, suggesting that this part may have originally had a different floor level. The house features a narrow central chimney-and-entrance bay.
