Description
The Church of St. Mary the Virgin is a parish church built in 1843 by J.B. Lacey in the Romanesque style, with a chancel added in 1892 by Bodley and Garner in the Decorated style. The church is constructed of brick in header bond, with a stone chancel and stone dressings on the doors and windows, topped by a steeply pitched slate roof. It features a wide nave, wide transepts, a chancel, and a west tower, along with two entrance porches located between the tower and the nave. The nave has four bays of round-headed windows with stained glass, while each transept has two bays with leaded lights. The nave also includes two-light windows with reticulated tracery and large stone corbel blocks under the eaves. The tower is divided into three stages, with the top stage being polygonal and topped by a small squat spire. The bell stage has stone arcaded openings, and there are stone oculi below.
Inside, there is an 18th-century wall tablet on the north wall of the north transept, made of marble with a pediment, commemorating Mrs. Mary Robinson who died in 1789. A 14th-century carved wood effigy of Sir Roger de Burfield is displayed in a glass case in the chancel. Under the tower, there are two 15th-century stone effigies believed to be of Neville, Earl of Salisbury, and his wife, Alice, both of which are defaced. The font is a large tapering bowl from the 12th century, re-cut in the 14th century, featuring a ten-sided form with shallow trefoil-headed panels. The east window contains stained glass by Burlison and Grylls.
