Description
Culverlands is a large country house situated within a parkland and landscaped setting. The house was originally built in the 18th century and subsequently altered and enlarged in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of painted stucco with slate hipped roofs. The building has an irregular plan, scattered chimneys and features a small plinth, a moulded eaves cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The windows are mostly sash windows, many with glazing bars, set within moulded architraves; those on the ground floor have scroll brackets and moulded cornices.
The front of the house has a two-bay projection to the left, with a tripartite window on the ground floor. The three recessed bays to the right contain a smaller 19th-century window and a round-headed sash window on the left. A 20th-century extension is situated below this, linked to an entrance porch on the right, which has square columns with moulded heads and a panelled door with a semi-circular, leaded fanlight above. A two-bay extension, slightly projecting, returns on the north-east front, featuring a full-height canted bay on the left, with sash windows. The first floor of the canted bay has a tripartite sash, while the ground floor window has been replaced with a single sash. Windows on this front lack glazing bars.
Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and wreathed handrails. The house is documented in the Victoria County History, Volume III, page 399.
