Description

The property at 1 High Street is a house dating to the late 16th century, with significant alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has a tiled roof, a structural timber frame, and a painted brick front. A dentil course runs along the eaves, and there’s a band at the first floor level. Sections of the front are tile-hung, while the canalside elevation features exposed timber framing. The building is arranged in an L shape.

The High Street elevation has five 20th-century casement windows to the left, with an insurance plaque positioned between the first and second windows from the left. A square, 19th-century oriel bay is situated to the right. A door is accessed via an iron bridge. On the ground floor, there's an open entry with a cambered head to the left, 20th-century casements flanking the central door, and a simple casement with a cambered head to the right.

The canalside elevation includes a gable on the left with exposed timber framing at the first floor and brickwork at ground floor level. It has two irregular casements on the first floor and one to the right of the ground floor. A further section of the building extends to the right with a pitched roof set at a right angle to the High Street. This section has two short bays of exposed timber framing, a 20th-century door under a flat hood to the left of the first bay, and a pair of 19th-century casements in the second bay.
