Description
Roman Way is a house located on Bushnells Lane in Stanford Dingley, dating from around 1500 and 1600, with 20th-century alterations and additions. The building is timber framed with curved braces and brick nogging, topped by an old tile roof featuring a large ridge stack that is off-centre to the left. It has large tile-hung gabled dormers on both the north and south sides, each with canted diamond leaded oriel windows supported by central shaped brackets.
To the right, there is a gabled cross wing that reveals a queen post truss in the gable end, while the rear gable end is also tile hung. The roof is thatched, with a catslide over a 20th-century lean-to and a stack to the right. The original structure includes an open hall with two cruck framed bays and a later three-bay cross wing to the right. The left side of the building has one storey and an attic, while the cross wing is two storeys high.
On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century leaded casements to the left, and a 20th-century leaded casement in the first floor of the cross wing to the right. Below this is a 20th-century recessed porch with arch braces, flanked by small leaded casements, and a boarded door behind. There is also a later one-storey lean-to to the left, which features a 17th-century boarded and studded door.
Inside, one cruck bay remains on the left. The ground floor room to the left has a 1600 inserted floor and fireplace, along with 16th and 19th-century linenfold panelling. The ground floor room to the right at the rear contains some 17th-century Flemish glass.
