Description
The cowshed at Herons Farm, now functioning as a barn, was built in 1884 by Alfred Waterhouse. It features a timber frame with internal brick nogging, a brick plinth, and both shaped and plain tile hanging. The roof is made of interlocking tiles and has eight gables, each with four-light casements. The building has an octagonal plan with aisles and five narrow windows on each face, except for the south-west and south-east sides, which have large 20th-century corrugated iron double doors. Inside, there is a complex radiating timber and iron roof structure supported by a central timber and iron column. The floor includes a narrow gauge railway line, and enamel plaques on the walls display the prizes won by the cattle. This cowshed is part of a model farm complex that was once served by its own narrow gauge railway.
