Description

The Bell Inn is a house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the 15th century or possibly earlier, with alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries, and a 20th-century addition. The building is constructed of brick and has a tiled roof. It has a long rectangular shape running east-west, with a 20th-century extension to the northeast and a 17th-century outshut to the northwest. The inn is two storeys high and features a central ridge chimney with two stacks, as well as end chimneys.

On the south elevation, there are two three-light casements on the left and three two-light casements on the right of the first floor. Below, there are two four-light casements with cambered heads on the left and one on the right of the door, which is sheltered by an open-sided porch with a lean-to and gabled tiled roof.

Inside, the building has four bays of timber framing, which are reputed to be cruck frames, with large close-cut set floor joists. There is a fireplace in the bay to the left of the entrance, complete with seats, a spit rack, a mantel, a pot jack, and a salt niche. The room to the left of the entrance features matchboarded panelling and fixed benches, which may date from the 19th century or earlier. A 17th-century staircase is located in the outshut at the rear of the central chimney. Access to the upper floor was not permitted during the survey.
