Description

Nos 78 to 84 on Southampton Street are a terrace of houses built in 1810 by Richard Billing, Senior. This three-storey building includes a basement and attic, constructed of brick with a stucco string course at the first-floor level and a smaller string course about 2 feet 6 inches above. The design features a small brick cornice string made up of a course of 4½ inch headers and a projecting course of brickwork. The parapet has stone coping, and the roof is covered with slate.

Each house has two semi-circular headed dormer windows with radiating glazing bars in the sashes. The windows are arranged in two ranges, with the first-floor windows being tall and having floor-level cills, set in segmental headed recesses. Each house also features elliptical curved balconies made of wrought iron with cast lead ornament. The doorways are recessed and have six-panel doors, flanked by fluted Greek Doric columns that support a key pattern frieze and a segmental radiating fanlight. The upper windows are grouped in pairs, creating a rhythmic pattern of 2-blank-2-blank, and so on.
