Description

This mile post, located approximately 50 meters southwest of the water tower on Bath Road, dates from the early 19th century and is made of cast iron. It features a raised backplate inscribed with "LONDON 40" at the top. The lower section is canted and has inscriptions on either side, with "READING" on the left and "NEWBURY 16" on the right. The mile post stands against a wall that is not of special architectural or historic interest. It is part of the street furniture along the old London to Bristol highway, highlighting the significance of this route as the main passage to the west.
