Description
Bath Road Bridge is a Grade II listed structure made of original handmade red brick, with red engineering brick used for patching and alterations to the parapets. The bridge features an English bond and limestone copings.
The central arch of the bridge is slightly taller than the side arches, with dimensions similar to those of the nearby Tilehurst Road Bridge, which has a central span of 38 feet 4 inches and approximately 30-foot side arches. The carriageway measures 24 feet (7.3 meters) between the parapets. The tapered piers originally had three tapering transverse arches, which have been blocked with brick, making them appear as blind arches. At least one tie plate is visible on the north face of the bridge.
The abutments and wing walls are vertical and straight, with a stepped string course running across each face. The outer face of the parapet is also stepped. In the 20th century, the parapets were raised by two courses of red engineering brick above the original coping, which remains in place, and they feature steeply pitched purple brick copings with small anti-climb spikes. The ends of the parapets have been rebuilt in red engineering brick, likely in connection with the construction of modern steel footbridges on both sides of the bridge, which are not attached. Notably, the east end of the south parapet was truncated and rebuilt in engineering brick to curve back on a concrete raft, forming part of the entrance to the southern footbridge. The modern steel footbridges are not of special interest.
The bridge is generally not visible in the wider landscape as it spans a cutting, but it can be seen in relation to Tilehurst Road Bridge.
