Description
42 Bath Road is a late 18th-century building that stands three storeys high with a basement. It is constructed of plum brick, featuring red brick flat arches. A plain stone string course runs along the first floor, and the building has flat eaves beneath a slate roof. The façade consists of five bays with glazing bar sash windows. The central entrance has a six-panel door topped by a segmental radiating and wreathed fanlight, all set within a rusticated surround. A well-proportioned Greek Doric wooden porch with fluted columns is located at the top of a flight of steps. There are 19th-century stone brackets at the first floor level with stone canopies, although the sculptures that were once present have been removed. The building has later side extensions, with three windows on the left and two storeys with two windows on the right. At the rear, there is a two-storey central porch featuring arched ground floor openings. Additional later extensions and a link block connect to a mid-19th-century chapel, which has since been converted into a gymnasium. The interior retains a contemporary staircase and the building was formerly known as the Blue Coat School.
