Description
This is a terrace of three early 19th-century houses located on the west side of Old Commercial Road, Landport, Portsmouth. The buildings are constructed of buff brick in a Flemish bond pattern, topped with a plain tiled hipped roof. Each house has a brick stack on the rear pitch.
Each house is three storeys high and one bay wide. A set of four stone steps leads to a recessed panelled front door, with the upper two panels glazed. The door surround features panelled reveals, flanking fluted pilasters, a panelled frieze, and a dentil cornice. To the right of the door, No. 379 has a four-pane sash window beneath a flat, gauged brick arch. No. 383 has a similar eight-pane sash window beneath a painted brick arch. No. 381 features a canted tripartite timber bay window with a central four-pane sash and narrower flanking sashes, with pilasters dividing the lights, a cornice, and a panelled apron below. The first and second floors of Nos. 379 and 383 also have eight-pane sash windows beneath flat, gauged brick arches, with No. 383’s window being painted. No. 381 has a sash window on the first floor with an upper leaf of four panes and a lower leaf of two panes, and an unequal eight-pane sash window on the second floor. A thin stone band cornice runs along the top, culminating in a coped parapet. The interior of the buildings was not inspected as part of the listing process.
