Description

The Dockyard Extension Wall at HM Naval Base was constructed between 1864 and 1870, with some 20th-century alterations. It is made of rubblestone and red brick, featuring a chamfered plinth, quoined brick pilaster strips, and brick bands. The wall stands approximately 4 meters high and includes ramps that rise over round archways, providing access to gun bastions. These bastions are visible on the outer face of the wall as corbelled semi-circular oriels, each with three gun slits and coping.

Throughout the wall, there are bricked-up quoined doorways with concreted lintels. Near building No. 3/88, which is not included in this listing, is the old Pitt Street Gate, characterized by rectangular piers made of banded brick and concrete blocks topped with flat concrete coping and lamps. The gate itself is a two-leaf board gate with iron spikes. Additionally, near the Unicorn Gate on the inner side of the wall, there is a small iron cupboard with a strap-hinged door, circular vents, and a central hole. This cupboard was originally positioned closer to the Unicorn Gate on the outer face of the wall and contained a gas jet for lighting pipes, as smoking and carrying matches were prohibited inside the dockyard.

The wall was built as part of the dockyard extension program initiated in 1864, with the design overseen by Colonel Sir Andrew Clarke of the Royal Engineers.
