Description

The HMS Royal Sovereign Memorial is a monument located in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, built around 1903 by White Bros. of Landport. It is made of granite and features a four-sided obelisk set on a base of sandstone slab. The memorial was erected by the officers and men in memory of those killed in a gun accident on board H.M.S. Sovereign off Platea on November 9th, 1901, while discharging their duty, as well as to honor those who died during the commission from 1899 to 1902. Inscriptions on the memorial list the names of those who were killed and those who died during the commission.
