Description

The HMS Powerful Memorial is a monument located in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, built around 1900. It features a four-sided polished pink granite obelisk set on a stepped stone base. The memorial was erected by Captain the Hon. Hedworth Lambton, along with the officers and ship's company of H.M.S. Powerful, in memory of the officers and men of the Naval Brigade who were killed in action or died during the campaign in South Africa from 1899 to 1900. Inscriptions on the memorial list the names of those who died, as well as significant locations from the campaign, including Ladysmith, Graspan, Belmont, Moddere River, and Paardeberg.
