Description

HMS Active Memorial is a monument located in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, dating from the late 19th century. It features a four-sided polished pink granite obelisk and base, which is set on a grey unpolished granite stepped sub-base. The inscriptions on the monument state: "Erected by the Officers and Ship's Company of H.M.S. Active," referring to the ship's role as the late flagship on the west coast of Africa and the Cape of Good Hope station. The memorial honors the memory of those shipmates who lost their lives while serving with the Naval Brigade during the Kafir War of 1877-1878 and the Zulu War of 1879. The casualties are listed alongside the inscription "Agilis et parata."
