Description
The Monument to Admiral Napier is a stone structure located in Victoria Park, Portsmouth, built in 1863. It features a sandstone column topped with a Romanesque capital and a finial, which is surmounted by a stone lion. The monument stands on a six-sided pedestal made of Portland stone, with three concave sides, resting on a tapering rusticated sandstone base. The lower base is constructed of uncoursed rubble set on a granite slab. This monument commemorates the death of Admiral Napier in 1860. An inscription on the monument states: "The monument was erected by the Petty Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, Seamen and Marines of Her Majesty's Navy 1863 - to commemorate the untiring efforts of a gallant Officer and true hearted man (Charles Napier c1786 - d1860) in advancing the welfare of the British sailor." Originally, the monument was located at the junction of Commercial and Edinburgh Roads.
