Description

The HMS Victoria Monument is a late 19th-century granite memorial located in Victoria Park, Portsmouth. This four-sided obelisk stands on a base and commemorates the officers and men who lost their lives on board H.M.S. Victoria on June 22, 1893, after it sank due to a collision with the Campordown off the coast of Tripoli. The monument was erected by the survivors of the tragedy. A bronze plaque lists the names of those who died, while an additional stone plaque notes that the monument was moved from Town Hall Square at the request of the survivors on April 10, 1903.
