Description
Nos. 395, 397, and 399 on Old Commercial Road in Portsmouth are a terrace of three houses built in the late 18th century. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a plain tiled roof. Each house has a stack on the right side, with Nos. 395 and 397 featuring brick stacks, while No. 399 is rendered. The houses are two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and each has two bays.
Approaching the recessed six-fielded panel door, which has glazed upper panels and panelled reveals, there are five stone steps flanked by attached railings. No. 395 has an early 19th-century tripartite canted bay on the right, featuring a central sash window and narrow flanking sashes, with pilasters dividing the lights, a frieze, and a moulded cornice, along with an apron below. Nos. 397 and 399 each have two sash windows on the right side, with No. 397 having a 12-pane sash. On the first floor, each house has two sash windows, with Nos. 395 and 397 also having 12-pane sashes. A brick dentil band course with a stone cap and a stone-coped parapet is present, and each house features a hipped dormer with a 6-pane sash window. The interior has not been inspected.
