Description

The Round Tower is a Grade II listed structure that is part of the dockyard sea defence wall and now serves as naval accommodation. It was built between 1843 and 1848 under the direction of Captain H James of the Royal Engineers and was dismantled and re-erected in its current position in 1867. The tower is constructed of ashlar and features a circular design with three stages. The lower stage is battered and includes both rectangular and round-arched openings. It has a machicolated band that rises over a round archway on the eastern side, as well as a machicolated parapet with roll-moulded coping. Originally, the tower was located to the north-west of the present No. 15 dock.
