Description

Nos 92 and 94 on High Street in Stony Stratford are a former early to mid-18th century coaching inn. The buildings are three stories tall and constructed of diapered brick, with No 94 featuring a steeply pitched early tiled roof, while No 92 has machine tiles. Both buildings have contemporary brick chimney stacks, with a new shaft on the right-hand side, and three dormers—two with nipped roofs and one flat-topped.

The exterior showcases a good moulded brick cornice with moulder kneelers at the verges, brick bands between the storeys, chamfered stone quoins, and a stone plinth. There are nine windows on the first and second floors, and the central entrance features a depressed archway supported by reeded pilasters and a keystone, with stop-chamfered cross panelling on the double gates. This entrance is flanked by plain brick pilasters extending from the plinth to the cornice.

No 92 has a modern shop front, while No 94 includes a small shop window with flanking pilasters that support a fascia, as well as a later doorway with plain pilasters, an entablature, and deep reveals leading to a panelled door. There are two additional windows on the north-west side. All windows are sash style, featuring wide wooden cases in plaster reveals with plain thin cills, and flat arched heads of gauged brick for the ground and first floor windows.

The buildings extend in two ranges to the north-east, with two-storey stone structures having high pitched tiled roofs. Inside, there is a good, wide oak staircase. Nos 62 to 86 (even), including Nos 66A, 70A, and 86A, Nos 88 to 106 (even), and the former St Anthony Franciscan preparatory school form a group with these buildings.
